Five years after the original Vault Hunters defeated The Destroyer, Eridium began flourishing through Pandora's crust. Handsome Jack seized this mineral for his corporation, establishing control from the orbiting Helios station. His plan involved luring a new group of Vault Hunters to a massive train, only to sabotage it and leave them for dead in a frozen wasteland. The survivors were found by a lone CL4P-TP unit and guided to the city of Sanctuary by The Guardian Angel. There, they joined the Crimson Raiders, a resistance movement made of civilian survivors and guerrilla fighters, to oppose Jack's tyranny. The conflict centers on Jack's attempt to unlock a new Vault, while the heroes seek to stop him from unleashing its power.

In Their Own Story

The game opens with the new Vault Hunters aboard a Hyperion train on Pandora. Their employer, Handsome Jack, suddenly sabotages the vehicle and abandons them in a frozen wasteland. Rescued by the last remaining CL4P-TP unit, the hunters are contacted by The Guardian Angel, who instructs them to head to Sanctuary. Upon arrival, they are tasked with rescuing Roland, the captured leader of the Crimson Raiders. The mission leads them to confront the Firehawk, a bounty hunter who turns out to be Lilith, whose Siren powers were enhanced by the new Eridium supply. She reveals that bandits, not Hyperion directly, actually took Roland. This marks the beginning of the alliance between the new hunters and the resistance to defeat Handsome Jack.
